Introducing solid food to your child

Introducing solids is one of the most awaited milestone for parents but it is also a roller coaster ride. You may spend lots of time and energy preparing dishes for your child just to see her playing with food. On the other hand, sometimes these kids amaze us by emptying out the whole bowl. Every parent wants "THE BEST" for their child, whether it is terms of when to start, how to start solids; what to give to her to eat (more importantly what not to give) etc. In this post, I would like to share some basic and important points about introducing solids that I learnt through my journey with my child.

When to start solids: The first and foremost question every parent has is "Is my baby ready for solid foods"? You can easily judge this through below checklist:

  • Has your child started showing interest in food; i.e. she curiously observes you eating and wants to grab the food.
  • Has your child got good neck support i.e. can hold her neck without support.
  • Has your child started sitting without support. (This is required for BLW that we will learn later)
  • Has your child lost tongue thrust? Tongue thrust is a natural phenomenon in babies that prevents them to eat and choke. e.g. If you offer something to very young(0-3 month old) baby, they try to push it with their tongue. It is called tongue thrust. check this video
Most of the babies are ready for solids in 4-6 months. If your child does not meet any one of the above mentioned criteria by 6 months except 3rd which is only required for BLW, please talk to pediatrician before starting solids.

What to avoid: It is a general guideline to not give certain food items to children till they achieve a certain age, which I also learnt through experience and talking to mother community.
  • Salt, sugar and honey should be avoided till your child attains 1 year of age. But natural sugar can be given to them; so for sweetness, you can add fruit (banana, apple, papaya, pear, mango etc.) purees or dry date powder. Although there is no alternative to salt, but you can add a very small quantity of lemon juice and other spices (hing, jeera, ajwain, black pepper etc. ) for enhancing the taste.
  • Avoid giving animal milk (ideally any animal protein) till one year of age. you can use it in small quantity in making any dish (e.g. porridge, kheer etc. ) and make sure it is boiled. Never give it to drink directly. If you want to completely avoid animal milk, you can add formula milk in the end (while serving) because formula milk can't be heated/cooked. You can give animal milk products (paneer, curd, ghee, butter etc.) to your child in small quantities.
  • Juices, coconut water etc. are not recommended till one year of age because it may displace BM/FM.

How to Start :
  • Start with only one meal and prefer to give it in morning by 11am to rule out any allergy.
  • Start with seasonal vegetables or fruits. My son's first food was steamed carrot.
  • In the beginning, introduce only one food at a time. Don't mix multiple items. Again it is advised keeping allergy in mind.
  • Gradually add a meal to your child's meals. After 3-4 weeks, you can add one meal. By your child's first birthday, she should be on 3 meals and 2 snacks.

Water :
When you start giving solids to your child, you should start giving water also. Start with small quantities. Water is mostly for oral hygiene in the beginning and as you increase number of meals. Increase quantity of water as well. Water is important to prevent constipation and dehydration.

For quantity, I would say go by your own intuition. Don't follow any formula or number. Quantity of water depends upon so many factors e.g. weather. If weather is hot, you can offer more water. In winter season, small amount should also be fine. So don't go by any golden number or rule. Babies anyway don't take much water initially.

Important points to remember
  • Till one year of age, breastmilk/formula milk is main source of nutrition. So don't skip bm/fm for solids. Food till one year of age is just for fun.
  • Offer solids after 45 min of BM or 1 hour of FM because when child is super hungry she will not accept solids and similarly when she is full she will not accept.
  • Always feed child in sitting position either in your lap, booster seat, high chair or on the floor. In the beginning, many children are afraid of sitting on high chair or booster seat so make them sit on floor if child can sit by her own or make her sit in your lap. Then gradually (in 1-2 months) they may start sitting on high or booster chair. Avoid feeding in rocker as well.
  • Never feed child in lying position. It can choke them.
  • Avoid forceful and distraction feeding. In the beginning this trick may work but in long run it will not. Keep play and meal time separate. In fact, discipline your child from the beginning for the meal time.
  • Introduce varieties of food of different texture, color and taste.
  • All days are not same. On some days, kid don't eat much which could be because of multiple reasons(illness, teething, age related milestone etc. ). Be patient and don't force-feed or distract feed.
  • Babies are like monkeys. They are very good at copying you. Eat along with them so that they can learn how to eat and chew.
  • Children's gum are strong enough to chew. So it is not necessary to give food of running consistency  and wait for teeth to come to offer solids. It is fine to give them soft solid foods(e.g. banana, steamed carrot sticks, steamed broccoli etc. )

Choking Hazards :
  • Grapes or similar shaped fruits/veggies.
  • Candies
  • Nuts
  • Chips (It does not seem an obvious choking hazard so be careful with it)

Never offer these items in a single piece. Cut them appropriately or offer them in powdered form. e.g. Cut grapes in 4 pieces(cut horizontally and vertically). Offer nuts in powdered form.

What to offer :
Check this post for food options that you can offer to your child.

Weaning Approaches
  • Traditional weaning: In this approach, you start with pureed food and then gradually move to mashed food. You feed the baby yourself with spoon.  It is a mess free and clean approach because you are feeding baby.
  • Baby led weaning : In this approach, you entirely skip pureed and mashed food and directly start from soft finger food where baby feeds herself. Expect a lot of mess to clean afterwards because baby is going to eat by herself. It is a modern scientific weaning approach which is really helpful in long run.
I am a  big time supporter of baby led weaning. I have been following BLW for my son and it is working well for us so all my weaning posts will be with respect to BLW.

Accessories : These are some of the things that I tried while my journey of introducing solids to my child and these really helped me to achieve my goal.
  • Pressure Cooker : I prefer to use steel pressure cooker for cooking. Aluminum utensils are not good for health so you should also avoid it.
  • Booster seat : It has an removable tray with cover. Since this tray gets fixed,  you don't need to buy extra suction plate.
  • spoon : Though in description of this spoon, it is for 8+ month child. But I used for my 6 month old son and works well for me. It is good for self feeding as well as if you want to feed your child yourself i.e. for traditional as well as baby led weaning.
  • Steel glass : This glass has an embedded ghanti(ring) in it which kids find very fascinating and it makes easier for parents to feed water in it.
  • sippy cup :  I prefer to use open cup/steel glass for feeding water at home but while travelling it can be messy so I bought sippy cup for such occasions or if there is hot summer(may, june weather of north india) and child is refusing to take water in steel glass.
  • zigzag cutter : It help in cutting vegetables or fruits in finger shape. Because of zig zag mark, it is easier for child to hold and eat.
  • vegetable chopper : It is most useful product. You can chop any vegetable in it and use for stuffing paranthas or add in khichdi/dalia.

Review of fitness2flash DR level1 program

I delivered my son by c section in September 2020. In my whole pregnancy I gained around 18-20kg weight and unfortunately I didn't lose even a single pound post pregnancy. I started walking after 3 months of c section but for exercise I was not sure from where do I start. Thankfully I found facebook group fitness2flash for moms and I joined level 1 program in April, 2021(when my son was ~7 month old) Best thing about this course is that it is specially designed for mothers which takes care of DR(diastis recti) etc.

How does it work :
It is a 21 day online fitness program where they send you exercise for each day in advance along with diet.

  • They have a diet plan for each weight range e.g. for 65-75kg diet plan is different from that of 75 above. Diet is a general diet plan in which they give you 12-15 options for each meal. Hence it is easy to follow.
  • For exercise they send you a detailed video of exercise along with pictures and names of exercise.
  • If you have any question or doubt, you can ask them by commenting on fb group which is exclusively made for participants only. You will also get healthy recipes and motivational posts on this group. Online live Q&A sessions are also conducted on need basis (we had 2 such sessions in entire program)

Did it work for me :

Don't think of this program as a simple weight loss program. It is a fitness program. Body weight is one parameter about your health. There are other parameters too e.g. waist size, fat in body, body stamina etc.
  • I lost around 1.5-2 kg in 21 days though I couldn't follow diet completely. I just made sure to cut all kind of sugar from my diet and eat healthy. I lost from waist and there is a visible difference in my tummy size( sadly I have a huge mummy tummy ).
  • There is definitely an improvement in my stamina and strength. I was not able to do wall sit for even 5 second on first day of program but at the end of this program, I could easily do it for ~30 second. On first day, I was super tired after exercise but in last week, I didn't find it so tough.
  • I never suffered any injury while doing exercise (that I was most worried about). Whenever I found any exercise tough either I skipped it or modified it as per my convenience.
  • Best thing about this program is that they don't give you false hopes. They always suggest you to go slow, listen to your body and focus on your overall well being.
What can be improved:

As I said I found this program very helpful but there is always a room for improvement.
  • Picture and sound quality of some of the initial videos was not good.
  • I found some videos less explanatory than others which definitely needs to be improved for next batches.

Is it safe for breastfeeding moms :

Absolutely. It is absolutely safe. I am a breastfeeding mom and feeds on demand to my son. I never introduced formula to my son and with this program, I never had any issue with my milk supply.

Equipment required :

  • dumbbells (optional) - you should decide on weights as per your strength. If you are a new mom, you can begin your journey with body weight and slowly introduce weights.
For first week I just used my body weight and then gradually moved to 0.5 kg weight(water bottles) and then 1.5 kg dumbbells.

Thank you Rinku shah and fitness2flash team for such an amazing platform. I couldn't find such a program anywhere.

How to clip baby's nails

Clipping baby's nails is biggest nightmare for every parent. Clipping baby's nails is not just important from hygiene point of view but from safety perspective as well. When babies start exploring their hands, they scratch themselves with nails.

When it comes to clipping baby's nails, there are a whole lot of options available in the market, some of the kinds are mentioned below:
  • Nail clipper with magnifier which is specially designed for baby
  • Regular adult nail clipper
  • Nail clipping scissors

For me personally, nail clipping scissors worked wonders. I used to be very worried about my baby's growing nails, until I found the scissors. I had tried mittens as well, but it was also not of much use. This is because as baby grows, they can easily pull it off and in the summer season, it is not a very good idea. Then finally we bought this nail clipping scissor. I didn't know that nail clipping could be so easy until I found this. I didn't even panic once to clip my son's nails. It comes with cover also so that even if it is left around baby she can't hurt herself.
Always Clip baby's nail while sleeping. Don't try when they are awake as it can cause injury accidentally.

if you wish to buy nail clipping scissor, you can buy from following link

There are many other nail clipping scissors available in the market at a cheaper price but I just tried this and it worked wonders for my little one so I never regretted buying this.

Precautions to follow while boosting your immunity

Given the prevalent covid-19 situation, we all are worried about immunity. Everybody is doing something or other to boost their immunity. Myriads of advices are being circulated on social media to help boost immunity which makes us to believe these and we start following these without consulting qualified doctors. But we need to be aware of the following regardless of the immunity routine we follow:

  • Women who are planning to conceive, are pregnant  or are on their periods should avoid following:
    • basil (tulsi)
    • cinnamon (daalchini)
    • fenugreek (methidana)
    • turmeric (haldi) milk
    • dry ginger (saunth)
    • black pepper
    • hot water
  • If you want to use/fumigate camphor in room, it is better to keep it at entry of house and around windows only. Keep it away from
    • kids less than 2 year of age
    • pregnant women
    • People who are prone to allergies
  • To give steam to children below one year, don't use vicks or camphor. Don't use camphor oil on their nose, chest or throat. As per research it can be harmful for them.
  • Feed only breastmilk or formula milk (not even water) to kids below 6 months of age. Breastmilk/formula milk is sufficient to boost their immunity. Remember Breastmilk is called liquid gold for its known nutritional value.
  • Wearing mask, sanitization and social distancing should be followed even if you are vaccinated.
  • Encourage everyone in your home to get vaccinated when they are eligible for it. If you are undergoing a treatment, discuss with your doctor if you should get vaccinated or not.
  • There is no vaccine for pregnant women, "just parented" women and people below 18 years of age. So it is our collective  responsibility to follow all the guidelines. For immunity, pregnant women should consume milk, green vegetables, citrus fruit in limited quantity. You can gargle and have steam/heat therapy for your throat before sleeping. Pregnant women should take special precautions in taking all medicines and supplements on time, go for regular doctor visits on time; alongside they shoud do light exercise, yoga and meditation. Staying calm in this stage is very important.
  • If you are giving immunity booster kadha to kids,  give only one tablespoon and add sweetener. It would be better to consult respective allopathic, homeopathic or ayurvedic specialist, since kadha is generally not recommended for kids.
  • Not every patient suffering from  cough, cold and fever is covid patient but persistent fever more than 102 is an alarming sign. Even if it is not covid, such a high temperature is not good for body. Only take paracetamol to lower body temperature. Don't take any other medicine without consultation. Disprin, ibuprofen or nimesulide without consultation can be dangerous for health and these medicines are not safe for pregnant women.
  • Download arogya setu and state government app (e.g. ayush kavach app in UP) in your mobile phone. In these apps, there is information about authentic covid 19 laboratories, helpline number, hospitals etc.
  • Don't trust or spread rumours. Always use authentic sources for information and knowledge. Don't blindly forward whatsapp or facebook messages. Before forwarding, check its authenticity. Wait for your turn to get vaccinated.
Stay safe and healthy.

Food choices for your child

Every parent loves to cook nutritious and healthy for their child. And they are in hunt for food which tickles the mouth as well as provides all-around nutrition to their child. So, if you are one of them, this is the right page for you to land. I am going to share list of food options that can be given to 6+ month old baby. These options are suggested keeping in mind Baby Led Weaning (BLW), so you will not find purees in this list.

check this post to learn basics of solids introduction

Given below are some of the best practices that I have been following and was advised for by our pediatrician:

  • It is recommended not to give salt, sugar and honey till one year of age. So, for sweetness, you can add fruit purees (apple, banana, papaya, mango etc.) or dry date powder. Although there is no replacement of salt, still for flavor you can add spices (jeera, hing, black pepper) and do dressing with a small quantity of lemon juice.
  • It is advised to avoid animal milk till one year of age, but in most cases, it can be used in recipes in small quantities. Just make sure it is boiled or if you want to completely avoid it, you can add formula milk. Make sure that you don't boil/cook formula milk. Just add it in the end of recipe.
  • To rule out any allergy, make sure to give any new food item in the morning only so that if baby is allergic to something, it is visible by the evening.
  • I use home-made desi ghee and home-made paneer for all recipes. But that is just out of love for my little-one, you can use whatever is convenient for you.

Vegetables to be added in cheela/dalia/khichdi

  1. Potato
  2. Tomato
  3. Onion
  4. Capsicum
  5. Peas
  6. Spinach
  7. Corn
  8. Beetroot
  9. Pumpkin
  10. Carrot
  11. Cauliflower
  12. Broccoli
  13. Bell peppers (red/green/yellow capsicum)
I basically try to add 5-6 different seasonal veggies in all recipes (whatever is available in home).

Spices to be added in cheela/dalia/khichdi/stuffed paranthas
  1. Hing
  2. Jeera
  3. Black pepper
  4. Ajwain
  5. Haldi
If you are adding chilies make sure that your child does not put it in their eyes.

To enhance nutritional value of food, you can add a tablespoon of foxnut(makhana) powder, dry fruits powder or home made peanut butter e.g. add in dalia, halwa, home made cerelac, curd etc. etc. while serving.

Check recipe of foxnut powder here.

When and how to offer dry fruits

You can give dry fruits powder to your child when you start solids but since dry fruits are allergens, make sure you give it in a very small quantity first to rule out any allergy. You can roast and make powder of all dry fruits except raisins.

Accessories : These are some of the things that I tried while my journey of introducing solids to my child and these really helped me to achieve my goal.
  • Pressure CookerI prefer to use steel pressure cooker for cooking. Aluminum utensils are not good for health so you should also avoid it.
  • Booster seatIt has an removable tray with cover. Since this tray gets fixed,  you don't need to buy extra suction plate.
  • spoonThough in description of this spoon, it is for 8+ month child.
  • zigzag cutterIt help in cutting vegetables or fruits in finger shape. Because of zig zag mark, it is easier for child to hold and eat.
  • vegetable chopperIt is most useful product. You can chop any vegetable in it and use for stuffing paranthas or add in khichdi/dalia
